"Viennese Girls"
Residential building Siebenbrunnengasse
Vienna
Project: Refurbishment of a historic residential building
Location: Vienna
Status: completed
Year: 2017
The renovation of a historical facade is (despite the many old buildings in Vienna) not an everyday undertaking and above all, takes a lot of nerve and patience on behalf of the client.
What a great house!
However, anyone who came by before the renovation was carried out in Siebenbrunnengasse could hardly grasp anything of this splendor.
A coarse cement plaster "Ratschenputz" applied in the 1960s gave the viewer just a clue that there might be a finely crafted, articulated facade underneath.
The main cornice threatened to fall off the damaged roof after considerable water penetration. In addition, the roof cladding was leaking and the sheet metal was rusting.
The facade renovation was especially challenging and time-consuming.
A coarse cement plaster "Ratschenputz" applied in the 1960s gave the viewer just a clue that there might be a finely crafted, articulated facade underneath.
In laborious manual work, the renovation company had to free the many ornaments, façade caryatids, gables and pillars from the old plasterwork and restore the destroyed stucco elements by casting.
The cornice had to be completely renewed, rescue was no longer possible. Fortunately, the client kept calm (in the event of a permanent threat of cost escalation).
In the end, both the building and the proprietor shine in new splendor.
