Thomas, one of my oldest and most important friends, asked me in the early summer of 2011 if I would like to design a single-family house for him and his family.
Planning for good friends always involves a certain risk.
Ten years after completion, all the wooden parts developed a lovely patina, and the beautifully designed garden creates a great organic contrast to the strict geometric shape of the house.
If something goes wrong with the project, the friendship is quickly endangered. However, over a beer in the local cafe, we had bravely decided to take the risk.
The result is a solid wooden house with an open floor plan and a great living basement illuminated via an atrium. Ten years after completion, all the wooden parts developed a lovely patina, and the beautifully designed garden creates a great organic contrast to the strict geometric shapes of the house. Along the way, a couple of things went wrong.
Midway, the construction company went broke, shortly after completion a storm blew the solar photovoltaic system away and there had to be a water damage too ...
But one thing I can say: the friendship survived!
